When AI Becomes Too Real: The Dangers of Emotional Attachment to Chatbots

AI chatbots are no longer just tools for answering questions or booking appointments. They can now hold conversations, remember details, and even simulate empathy. For some, this has led to emotional bonds with their digital companion — a trend that’s raising important mental health questions.

While it’s natural to form connections with something that feels responsive and understanding, emotional dependence on AI can have unintended consequences. As a psychotherapist, I’m seeing more conversations around technology and emotional wellbeing, especially among young adults and those experiencing loneliness.

Why People Form Attachments to AI

Chatbots can be appealing because they:

  • Offer non-judgmental responses

  • Are available 24/7

  • Can provide a sense of companionship

  • Adapt to user preferences and communication styles

For those who find in-person relationships challenging — due to social anxiety, isolation, or past trauma — AI can feel like a safe, predictable connection.

The Potential Risks of AI Relationships

While interacting with AI isn’t harmful in itself, emotional over-reliance can:

  • Reduce motivation to seek human connections

  • Blur the line between reality and simulation

  • Limit emotional resilience in unpredictable situations

  • Increase feelings of isolation if the AI interaction ends or changes

Signs Your Relationship with AI Might Be Affecting Your Wellbeing

You may want to take a closer look at your usage if you:

  • Prioritise chatbot conversations over human interaction

  • Feel strong emotions (love, anger, jealousy) towards your AI

  • Notice real-life social skills declining

  • Avoid challenging in-person situations in favour of AI companionship

How to Maintain a Healthy Balance

  1. Set boundaries – Limit time spent engaging with AI.

  2. Diversify connection sources – Prioritise friendships, family, and community interactions.

  3. Use AI intentionally – Treat it as a tool or supplement, not a replacement.

  4. Reflect on your needs – Consider what draws you to AI and whether human connection could meet that need.

 When Therapy Can Help

If you find yourself increasingly reliant on AI for emotional support, therapy can help you:

  • Explore underlying causes of loneliness or social anxiety

  • Build confidence in real-world relationships

  • Develop strategies for balanced technology use

Digital tools can have a place in our lives — but our deepest wellbeing comes from meaningful human connection.

If you’re feeling isolated or anxious about reconnecting in person, I can offer a safe, supportive space to help you rebuild confidence.Get in tou
